We should all be concerned about the future because we will have to spend the rest of our lives there.
- Charles Kettering
Look at your past, review it, let it go and begin to plan your future.
You must not allow your less than joyful yesterdays be the predictor for an unhappy future. Here are 5 steps to getting unstuck from your past and move into planning your future.
Step 1
Make a list of all the things that you can do differently. If there are things that you may not have direct control of or specifically influence than identify those around you that do. Think about how they can help you.
Step 2
As you think about your experience look for any positive outcomes or influences the experience brought you. What did you learn? What impact did the experience have on you and how did that experience shape who you are? Ponder those positive features that you have in your life right now.
Step 3
Create an on-off switch to thwart your negative thoughts and behaviors. Snap your fingers, gently tap your foot or close your eyes and take a deep breath whenever you are experiencing negative energy. Signal your brain that negative thoughts are unacceptable. Consistently repeating this response to your negative feelings will help you to control of any current negative behavior. Negative thoughts results from less than positive feelings. Your behavior will follow suit if you do not take control of it.
Step 4
Whenver you are faced with negative feeling about an incident or area in your past use this affirmatiive statement to give your clarity about your history.
I can not make yesterday better. I can not change the past.
Repeat this to yourself everytime you begin to feel vicitimized by your past. Do not allow your not so positive thoughts about your past paralyze you. Let go of the past as well as your pity party.
Step 5
Every morning as part of your daily meditation or prayer incorporate this affirmation to get you on the right track for the day.
Today, I begin anew. This is the first day of my new life.
The beauty of this affirmation is you get to start over everyday!
