10 Steps Approach to Creating your S.M.A.R.T Objectives

Setting effective objectives will guide you to reaching your goals. Poorly formulated objectives will steer your life in the wrong direction and potentially set you off course. This 10 step approach to creating S.M.A.R.T objectives will assist you to move forward with setting fundamental objectives in order for you to reach your goals and your greatest potential.
  1. Sort out the difference between objectives and aims. Your goals and targets must be defined before you start. Aims and goals relate to your desired objectives and are your plan of action. Set as many objectives as you need to give your vision clarity and purpose.
  2. Understand the model S.M.A.R.T and how it can positively impact your planning process. Know that it stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely.
  3. Try to use the order M-A-R-S-T, some find it a better way to move through your goals.
  4. Stay connected with your measuring device. Measure is the most important consideration and you must have clarity about how you are going to capture this data. You will know when you have achieved your objective, because there will be evidence. Be sure you are clear about how you will recognize and record your success.
  5. Stay focused in your tunnel vision as well as on your birds eye view of what is achievable. Achievable is linked to measurable and they both are moving targets. What is achievable today you may find after research is not obtainable after all; be flexible to make adjustments to your plan if necessary. Usually, there’s no point in starting a job you know you can not finish it, right. Similarly, there is also no point if you can’t tell if and when you’ve completed it either.  Let us begin with knowing what is achievable. How can you decide if it’s achievable?
    • you know it’s measurable
    • others have done it successfully - before you or somewhere else
    • it’s theoretically possible - not just conceivable but do-able
    • you have the necessary resources, or at least a realistic chance of getting them
    • you have assessed the limitations and are prepared for them
    • you are aware of the barriers and believe that you can overcome them

  6. Be clear about the difference between achievable and realistic. If it’s achievable, it may not be realistic. If it isn’t realistic, it’s not achievable. You need to know:
    • who’s going to do it?
    • do they have (or can they get) the skills to do a good job?
    • where will the money coming from?
    • who carries the burden and responsibility?

Realistic is about the human resources, time, money, & opportunity.

  7. Put first thing first and know what comes first. The main reason it is achievable but not realistic is that it may not consistently be a high priority for you to take one step at a time. Often something else needs to be done first, before you can succeed. If so, recognize what is needed first and then set up two (or more) objectives in priority order. For example, a business license before starting your business. A degree before you apply for a job as an accountant.
  8. Maintain a clearly defined road map. The challenge is in the specific detail. You will know your objective is precise enough if:
    • everyone who’s involved knows that it includes them in detail
    • it is clear, precise and understood by all involved
    • jargon or industry terms that are defined and specific
    • you defined on your terms
  9. Be diligent with your time. Your time is valuable so practice setting deadlines. You must include a time limit or your objective can not be measurable. But your deadlines must be realistic, or the task won't be achieved in a reasonable time frame. T (time) must be M (measured) and your objectives must be R (realistic) and S (specific) without these your objective probably will not be high priority. You want narrowly focused statement to direct your movement. Timeless vague objectives, each will cause you loss of valuable time.
  10. Persevere! It is a challenge, but you will be greatly rewarded as the fruit from your labor blossoms.
If you don't know where you are going, you will probably end up somewhere else.  ~Lawrence J. Peter

S.M.A.R.T Planning for your Personal Goals

Nothing happens until we plan. Good plans have goals and objectives. Setting goals and objectives correctly provides the necessary support and aids in there achievement. Before we dive into how to go about setting SMART objectives, it’s important to understand that there is a world of difference between goals and objectives.
  • Goals relate to our aspirations, purpose and vision. For example, I have a goal of becoming financially independent.
  • Objectives are the battle plan, the stepping stones on the path towards the achievement of my goal.
A goal may have one or many objectives that would need to fulfilled to achieve the goal. For example, to become financially independent I would need to 1) get out of debt, 2) improve my saving and 3) start a business.
The most well known method for setting objectives is the S.M.A.R.T. way.  S.M.A.R.T refers to the acronym that describes the key characteristics of meaningful objectives.

Specific - concrete, detailed, well defined

Measureable - numbers, quantity, comparison
Achievable -feasible, actionable
Realistic - considering resources
Time-Bound - a defined time line

SMART objective are the stepping stones towards the achievement of your goals. Lets look at these characteristics of this model in more detail.

Specific

Specific means that the objective is concrete, detailed, focused and well defined. That is the objective is straightforward, emphasizes action and is the required outcome. Objectives need to communicate what you would like to happen. To help set specific objectives it helps to ask the following questions:
  • WHAT am I going to do? This are best written using strong, action verbs such as conduct, develop, build, plan, execute, etc. This helps your objective to be action-orientated and focuses on what’s most important.
  • WHY is this important for me?
  • WHO is going to do what? Who else need to be involved?
  • WHEN do I want this to be completed?
  • HOW am I going to do this?
The successful man is the average man, focused. ~Unknown
Diagnostic Questions
  • What exactly are we going to do, with or for whom?
  • What strategies will be used?
  • Is the objective well understood?
  • Is the objective described with action verbs?
  • Is it clear who is involved?
  • Is it clear where this will happen?
  • Is it clear what needs to happen?
  • Is the outcome clear?
  • Will this objective lead to the desired results?

Achievable

Objectives must be achievable, if the objective is too far in the future, you’ll find it difficult to keep motivated and to strive towards achieving it. Objectives, unlike your dreams and visions, need to be achievable to keep you interested and motivated. Although they should be obtainable, objectives still need to present a challenge for you. Just be careful that they do not carry a heavy burden that you become frustrated and lose motivation.

Diagnostic Questions
  • Can we get it done in the proposed timeframe?
  • Do I understand the limitations and constraints?
  • Can we do this with the resources we have?
  • Has anyone else done this successfully?
  • Is this possible?

Realistic

Objectives that are achievable, may not be realistic….. however, realistic does not mean easy. Realistic means that you have the resources to get it done. The achievement of an objective requires resources, such as, skills, money, equipment, etc. to support the tasks required to achieve the objective. Most objectives are achievable but, may require a change in your priorities to make them happen.

Diagnostic Questions
  • Do you have the resources available to achieve this objective?
  • Do I need to revisit priorities in my life to make this happen?
  • Is it possible to achieve this objective?

Measurable

If the objective is measurable, it means that the measurement source is identified and we are able to track the results of our actions, as we progress towards achieving the objective. Measurement is the standard used for comparison. For example, what financial independence means to me, may be totally different to what is means for you. As is so often quoted, if you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it! Importantly, measurement help us to know when we have achieved our objective. Or it will identify problem areas and prompt you to re-evaluate your course.

Diagnostic Questions
  • How will I know that the change has occurred?
  • Can these measurements be obtained?

Time-Bound

Time-bound is setting deadlines for the achievement of the objective. Deadlines create the all important sense of urgency. If you don’t set a deadline, you will reduce the motivation and sense of urgency required to execute the tasks. Deadlines create the necessary state of immediate attention and action.

Diagnostic Questions
  • When will this objective be accomplished?
  • Is there a stated deadline?
There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when circumstance permit. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results. ~ Unknown

Personal Leadership

This article was written by George Ambler almost four years ago. The information is worth repeating.

We talk a great deal about our image and our personal identity. I would like to take a next step forward and suggest to you that you consider your Personal Leadership Brand. Before we can go deep into that, I would like to offer you this article to lay the foundation of leadership.

As leaders it’s important to gain an understanding of the context in which we practice leadership. To assist in understanding context the levels of leadership model, illustrated below, is helpful.
In our every days lives we practice leadership at various levels, each requiring a different set of competencies, styles and approach. The various levels of leadership context we practice are:
  • Personal Leadership – Greg Thomas describes personal leadership as “the desire of an individual to take charge of his or her own life. Personal leaders realize that leadership is not a position or title, but an outlook on life and their role in the world…..If personal leadership had a motto it would be this, ‘Before I seek to change or motivate others I must first learn to change and motivate myself. I must first become the change I wish to see in others.’” Personal leadership involves living in balance, living according to your personal values, accepting responsibility for their lives, living with a deep sense of purpose and striving towards a personal vision. Personal leadership is the foundation of all other leadership contexts, the bottom line is, if you’re unable to lead yourself effectively, you’ll be unable to lead others effectively.
  • Team Leadership – A team leadership practice, builds upon personal leadership competencies, to create a motivated and inspired team co-operating towards a shared vision of success. This requires leaders to manage team dynamics, manage team processes and personalities, in a manner that enables each team member, to contribute according to their unique abilities. Good team leaders develop team’s consisting of individuals, where each individual’s strengths compensates for another’s weakness, creating an aligned high performance team.
  • Business Unit Leadership – Building upon the team leadership practice, Business Unit Leadership creates alignment across teams, ensuring the successful execution of organizational strategy. The practice of leadership, in the business unit context, is primarily about creating alignment, improving processes, staying focused, communication and developing relationships. I believe that good quality business unit leadership is essential to ensure the successful execution of organisational strategy.
  • Organizational Leadership – The practice of organisational leadership involves developing strategic direction, leading change and managing cultural transformation. Organizational leadership is crucial to maintain the fit between the external, fast changing, marketplace and the internal organisational processes to build organizational resilience.

Creating Your Personal Leadership Brand - Dress Code

Here is a great article that I saw today, I want to share about your taking responsibility for your personal leadership. How you present yourself is a key component in defining your personal brand, even on Casual Fridays.

4 Steps to Creating a Powerful Image

Submitted by Lori Grant on May 15, 2009 – 7:32 amNo Comment
Don’t pull a Meredith on casual Friday at office. Clothes matter, even on Fridays. Business image is vital to personal branding. Selling Power’s article “From Model to Mogul, How Three Supermodels Turned Great Looks into Big Business” by Kim Wright Wiley, perfectly summarizes image in personal branding. Linda Thomas, who presents seminars on such topics as “Creating a Powerful Appearance,” “Color Me Promoted,” and “What to Do When the Spotlight Is on You,” says she’s usually “brought in when companies have a promising individual they want to promote who doesn’t know how to dress.”
“Managers recognize when salespeople are diluting their own effectiveness through their appearance, but they don’t want to play the role of fashion police. So they call me.” Thomas says an image of “dynamic and powerful” goes further than “handsome or pretty.” Why? “Pretty attracts people but it doesn’t affect their behavior as much as when you seem dynamic. Then the client perceives you as someone who has goals, who has a plan, and they want to go with you.”

Four Steps to Creating a Powerful Image

Below are Thomas’ four steps to a powerful image with my commentary:
  1. Wear clothes that fit: according to Thomas, “men tend to wear clothes that are too large. Women, in contrast, are more likely to wear clothes that are too tight, leading to unintentional (and unprofessional) displays of skin.” From my personal experience, I used to buy suits that were one size too big. What was I thinking? Today, I make sure I have them altered for the perfect fit. The devil’s in the details. Even your sleeve length on your suit is a tell, so make sure your sleeve length is the appropriate length.
  2. Be conscious of color: “Light colors in general are relaxing and good choices when you want to reassure people. The darker the color, the more authority it exerts; a navy suit practically commands ‘Follow me.’” Personally, I wear red sparingly, since it’s a powerful color. I don’t want to accidentally scare people. If scaring people is not an issue, but need a bold statement, then I’ll wear read.  I wear black when I want to be more guarded in my situation. I wear black all the time. What does this mean? Nothing, it’s one of my favorite colors. But I do use it strategically, when I have to. Yellow? I can’t find a function for yellow. I don’t understand this color. It’s like brown for me, which is not one of my colors.
  3. Beware of Casual Friday: “Business casual has turned into business sloppy,” says Thomas, “with people wearing clothes that are so unimpressive that they’re actually losing power in the work place. You don’t have to wear a suit, but your clothes should still be well-fitting, clean, and professionally appropriate.” I used to mimic what my boss and colleagues wore on casual days; it made me feel like part of a team.
  4. Create a Signature Style: “Be a walking illustration of your brand. Women have many accessory choices, from scarves to purses to jewelry. Men can make a similar statement with yellow ties, suspenders, Italian loafers, oversized spectacles, or cuff links. But not all at once – if your clothing has too many interesting elements, it can look like a costume. Choose one signature element and stay with it.” My signature style? Black. Yes, I wear it when I want to be at a distance, but I also wear it because it’s one of my signature colors.

She offers additional advice on how to create and maintain a favorable impression, starting with appearance, eye contact, posture and other body language designed to develop professional presence. My lessons learned about business image? Over the years, I’ve learned how to use colors for the right situations or meetings. If you combine your image with self-confidence, then I think you have the making of a dynamic and powerful image. Or you could let it all hang out like Meredith in The Office.

The 5 Drivers of Leadership Success ~ Self Direction

Taking initiative is an essential key to taking ownership of your own destiny. Being a leader requires you to have the ability to assess and start things independently. A good leader develops the confidence to pioneer and launch their desires into action. Intend to have the power to act. Take opportunities to take charge before others do.

In order to become a successful leader you must finesse your ability to an act or strategy intended to resolve a difficulty or improve a situation. If you are not prepared to do then you are deemed to be a bystander to someone else's vision and desires. YOU must be the one to create a fresh approach to a situation in order to positively impact it in your favor. You want to be the first to develop and implement a new method, YOUR new method - don't leave your destiny in the hands of others.

In order to direct yourself, you must first understand that your experiences shape your  values and beliefs about leading yourself as well as others. As you develop, your values and beliefs directly impact your leadership style and subsequently create the space or environment in which you lead.

If you are not satisfied with the environment in your business, family or relationships; you must first examine your current values and belief system. You must take a critical look at your experience and note how they have impeded on those systems in your life. Once you have done so you will have the ability to develop greater leadership skills.

Easy Guide to Becoming a Visionary

Using Your Vision

To Become a Visionary

Is it true that if you have a vision you are already a visionary? Is it necessary to be a visionary to realize your dreams?

Andrea Callahan

andreacallahan.com

How to Become a Visionary to Create the Life You Want

Question: Is it true that if you have a vision that means that you are a visionary?

Answer: No

You may have a vision as a result of your dreams and passions. You may perceive the possibility of realizing your dreams. Unfortunately that is not enough to be considered a visionary. You probably have a dream or a passion that you conceive possible for achievement. However, it is not until you put the plan in action that you become a visionary.

As a visionary your goal is realized based on your dreams and vision. Visionaries are innovative, enterprising and resourceful. You are moving the fantasy of your vision into a tangible outcome. Your vision is the broad general intention that is abstract and can't be validated. On the other hand, as a visionary your actions are precise and concrete. Your plan is narrowly focused, based on specifics and can be validated.

Question: Why is it important to be a visionary and not just have a vision?

Answer: Your vision alone is long term so you may spend too much time daydreaming about what you want. It is difficult to measure a vision so you will not be able to gauge how close you are to realizing your end result. Unlike a visionary, who establishes short term movement toward the goal and can easily measure proximity of goal achievement. This is beneficial to you because if you are not on target to execute your plan in a timely manner or you are faced with barriers you are able to immediately recalculate a new direction or amended the plan where necessary.

Do you have a vision or are you a visionary?

Is this you?

Your vision: I want to own my own business.

When? One day

How close are you to owning your own business? Making progress, hard to know exactly.

What is your business and what does it look like? Still dreaming and figuring it out.

Is this you

I am going to get a business license on Friday to sell vintage clothing to women in a store on Main Street. I will sign the lease by month's end to open my store by June.

Your vision is your:

  • Dream
  • Plan
  • Goal

As a visionary you are set into action. You are executing your vision. You are on the move.

Understanding a Visionary

A visionary is insightful and looks in all areas of their life and environment to discover their available resources and tools needed for success. As a visionary you will begin to think specifically and calculate your journey to achievement. You will be wise and in your decision making. You will handle your finances as a shrewd business woman.

Visionaries are able to adapt to change and look for creative solutions to overcome obstacles. As a visionary you will use adversity as learning tools and setbacks as a device to keep you focused on your mission. You will view challenges as the Universe's message to you for deeper understanding and action.

The visionary is not a victim of their circumstances, they create their circumstance. They are the co-creator of their existence. They sit in the driver seat and decide the direction of their life; not waiting for directions from someone else. They are producers, executives, entrepreneurs and leaders. You too can be the manager of your life as a visionary.

  1. Own your life. The good, the bad and even the ugly. Take responsibility for your past, learn from your poor choices, appreciate your mistakes and plan for your future. Decide that you are not a victim, you are a victor. Beginning today!
  2. Thrive in knowledge and continuous learning. Indulge yourself in self-development and self-improvement as they both are essential as you continuously EVOLVE.
  3. Surround yourself with positive people. Seek out industry leaders, successful people or anyone that has achieved the goals that you want to accomplish. Follow community leaders and those that revered. Watch how they behave, where they go, what they do and how they experience life. This is a step toward your EMPOWERMENT.
  4. Utilize change, challenge, barriers and obstacles as tools to learn, grow and develop. Each of the above will demonstrate your strength. You will learn to tap into your hidden potential. Your ability to adapt will increase as well as your ability to engineer change.
  5. Make your dreams mobile. Do not allow them to be stationary. You must be the co-creator of your life. It is essential that you execute your vision. Perform your dreams and create your fantasy in real life. As a result you will live in an EXCEPTIONAL space.

A visionary utilizes negative situations as lessons to learn from. They use barriers as a tool to tap into their hidden potential. A visionary will see obstacles as the vehicle for their resourcefulness. Change for a visionary is the instrument to create greatness!

You too can move your vision into your transformation to a visionary. Move your dreams into reality. Your inspiration can translate your enterprising spirit. Partner your foresight with wisdom and you will be on your way to success. Together your innovative mind and your shrewd consciousness will create your optimum life. As a result you will be in position of reverence and honor. You will lead others to seek greatness and lead by example a REVOULUTIONARY existence.

Begin now, make note of your dreams. What do you envision for your life? What do you hope to accomplish in this life? You would like to inspire to something, what is it? What do you daydream about?

Now think about:

  • What conditions are necessary in your life to make that a reality?
  • What resources do you need?
  • What skills must be developed?
  • What knowledge must you have?
  • What do you need to accomplish before you can achieve your goal?

For additional information on what to do with the answer to these questions, I offer you a free webinar.

5 Steps to Moving from your Past and into your Future

We should all be concerned about the future because we will have to spend the rest of our lives there.
- Charles Kettering

Look at your past, review it, let it go and begin to plan your future.

You must not allow your less than joyful yesterdays be the predictor for an unhappy future. Here are 5 steps to getting unstuck from your past and move into planning your future.

Step 1

Make a list of all the things that you can do differently. If there are things that you may not have direct control of or specifically influence than identify those around you that do. Think about how they can help you.

Step 2

As you think about your experience look for any positive outcomes or influences the experience brought you. What did you learn? What impact did the experience have on you and how did that experience shape who you are? Ponder those positive features that you have in your life right now.

Step 3

Create an on-off switch to thwart your negative thoughts and behaviors. Snap your fingers, gently tap your foot or close your eyes and take a deep breath whenever you are experiencing negative energy. Signal your brain that negative thoughts are unacceptable. Consistently repeating this response to your negative feelings will help you to control of any current negative behavior. Negative thoughts results from less than positive feelings. Your behavior will follow suit if you do not take control of it.

Step 4

Whenver you are faced with negative feeling about an incident or area in your past use this affirmatiive statement to give your clarity about your history.

I can not make yesterday better. I can not change the past.

Repeat this to yourself everytime you begin to feel vicitimized by your past. Do not allow your not so positive thoughts about your past paralyze you. Let go of the past as well as your pity party.

Step 5

Every morning as part of your daily meditation or prayer incorporate this affirmation to get you on the right track for the day.

Today, I begin anew. This is the first day of my new life.

The beauty of this affirmation is you get to start over everyday!

If Someone is Walking Away From You Let Them Walk On.

If someone in your life is walking away from you, then let them walk on. If they are exiting your life, let them leave. Understand that they are not destined to be in your life if they are walking away.

This indeed is a difficult concept for some. Are you conditioned to believe that people are to remain in your life forever. Have you ever told a friend or loved one, "we are going to be together forever." If so, you may have set yourself up for the challenge of letting go. You may have unconsciously put yourself in position to have folks in your life whose time is long gone and you are simply ignoring the signs to evict.

If you are going through a divorce, job loss or break up of some kind it may be time for you to come to the realization that your destiny is not tied to that person or job. Think about it, your destiny can't be tied to someone that left or something that is over. So, let it go. Accept that most people that we befriend, date, work with are meant to be in our lives for a season. You may have a dear friend that only complains or gossips when you speak and you can not share your plans to start your own business or seek that advanced degree. Perhaps you have friends that don't share your ambitions so they are negative haters and downgrade all of your ideas or plans.

You know the difference when you are engaging with someone who is destined to be in your life for a purpose. You know when you walk away from someone if they impacted your life in a positive way. Even if it was a simple exchange of positivity or best wishes. When you hang up from someone that is good for you, it is evident by the smile and sense of satisfaction that you feel. Moreover, you look forward to the next exchange.

What you may not be so clear about is the purpose of the back stabbers and nay sayers. They too serve a role in your life. Those folks teach you to think and process. They teach you not be guided by emotion alone. They teach the need for due diligence. They teach you to listen, I mean really listen. Negative people are very seldom hide who they really are. It usually does not take long for a person with venom to reveal themselves. It is your job to listen to the truth that the people in your life are displaying.

One clear distinction: you can envision your future with someone or situation that is meant to be long term; generally you can't do so in a productive way for those that are not.

The Universe strategically places people and situations in our lives for a reason. One person may be in your life to teach you to trust. Another may have been in your life to show you what it feels like to be loved. Yet another may have been placed in your life to teach you a valuable lesson in taking your time and building a solid relationship based on truth. Any of these relationships at some point made you feel wonderful, that is why you engaged in the exchange. However, it is when your that is over and you don't want to let go that it becomes a problem.

What are the top 10 signs that the season may have passed on a relationship or situation:
  1. None or minimal common interests
  2. Communication is jagged or non-existent
  3. Signs of disrespect are frequent
  4. A strong sense of indifference is present
  5. The ability to empathize is gone
  6. Joy and happiness are depleted
  7. Any exchange leaves you empty and no sense of fulfillment
  8. The relationship does not make you happy
  9. Acknowledgment that you don't like the person or situation
  10. Negative emotions are associated at the thought of contact
Begin today, accept that everyone is not tied to you forever. That may include your partner, your job, your best friend and yes, even the love of your life. Learn to let people and situations go when their season is over. Practice looking for the warning signs and more importantly you have to actually apply the application of deleting where and when necessary.

Here is an exercise for you to do today. Get your cell phone, your Outlook contacts, your rolodex or address book. Start with A and work you way down to Z. Yes, this includes Facebook, Twitter etc..Delete the following entries and anyone that:
  • You no longer have a positive relationship with
  • You don't really like
  • You have no interest in knowing how they are doing or what's going on in their life
  • Brings you drama or negatively, consistently
  • Undermines your success
  • Is not supportive of your goals and dreams
  • Does not move you forward
  • Does not uplift your spirit
  • Does not value you
  • Is mean to you
  • Disrespects you
  • Hurts you
  • You can't envision a positive future with
By no means, am I suggesting that this is an easy process. This process is often painful and may present feeling of failure on your part that you could not maintain the relationship or make it work. You will find that there maybe someone in your life that demonstrates characteristics on the above list but compensate positively in other areas. Only you can gauge when the negative outweighs the good. Just keep in mind that if you are dealing with any of the negative above in your relationship then the other areas should be great not just good or O.K.

Tip: Take small steps if you are not ready for a complete overhaul. Go through your contacts, make a list of those that fit this criteria and write them down. Have a conversation with those that score high in the negativity range. Talk to them about how they make you feel, express your needs and give them the tools to become positive agents in your life. Depending on how close they are to you or how badly you want to keep the relationship, you may consider counseling, a mediator or spiritual advisement.
Give yourself a time limit for their expected change, if they still do not get off that list, then make your deletions.

To speak with a Life Coach on how to embark on this journey in your life contact me.

Yes, Andrea I am ready to make some deletions and I need help!
